What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I love doing Facebook marketing. I buy ads and promote my pages through Facebook. This has worked pretty well for me.
Describe your desk
Ha! My desk can be described as a total mess to some folks, but I have hidden gems and secrets to all of my writing there! On a good day, I have 2 piles of disorganized papers. On a bad day, there are 5 piles! Let's just say, I work somewhere in between 2-5 piles!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the public housing of New Orleans. This greatly influenced not just my writing, but my overall work ethic. People always say, "You work so hard!" I say,"Yeah. It's because I never want to go back to the projects." I'm know to have at least 4-6 projects going on at the same time. Organized insanity suits me.
When did you first start writing?
I've always been a reader and a writer. I started writing poetry in the 5th grade. I also developed a love of reading at an early age too. I actually won an award fro reading the most books in the library when I was in the 3rd grade! Imaging that. I still have the certificate to prove it!
What's the story behind your latest book?
I was searching for a book about an African-American nurse practitioner to read to my 2 year old. I couldn't find one. I then developed Nola the Nurse. Since I hold a doctorate degree in nursing and by trade, work as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I felt it wouldn't be a stretch creating a really good book about a little girl who dreamed of becoming a nurse practitioner like her mommy. The setting is in New Orleans. Thus, Nola as her name, was original, right? She decides to do home visits to visit the sick dolls of her friends. In each home she visits, she learns something about the culture while fixing a sick doll.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like control! Who doesn't? I was unsure of how to write query letters and really didn't have time to research it only to get rejected. So, I started out on a quest to just write really good books. In the process, I've discovered that indie publishing is a completely different career path, but I'm managing both right now. I plan to continue working as a Family Nurse Practitioner while writing books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I get to be someone else. Plus, writing is so liberating to me.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Then, everything again! I would be nowhere without them!!!
What are you working on next?
I'm finishing up the Nola the Nurse series. Then, I will expand that line to add new characters.
Who are your favorite authors?
Toni Morrison, Dr. Maya Angelou
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that I'm alive and in good health. Plus, the laughter and kisses of my two babies totally fuels my ambition like nothing I have ever experienced.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I usually try really hard to go to the gym!
